If you’re like me, there must have been times when you despaired of the workings of parliamentary democracy in the UK. Prime Minister’s Questions is an affair of school playground yah-boo barracking, and the questions, such as they are, certainly don’t usually produce answers.
But it’s a mistake to judge politics solely by this weekly charade, for there are other good things that go on with less publicity. My faith in the soundness of our democratic institutions has been reinforced recently by the spectacle of bankers squirming before the Select Committee enquiring into the current banking crisis. In this forum, the questions and comments are well-informed, measured, and very searching.
I like it here!
