Like many people, I deplore the suggestion in some of the media that the present Pope is ‘soft’ on anti-semitism or is a secret nazi sympathiser. But I wonder about his judgement. Let’s accept, for the sake of argument, that he didn’t know about Williamson’s denial of the Holocaust (though I find that implausible). Let’s even accept that he wants nostalgic conservatives still to feel at home in the Church that they knew pre-Vatican II, when the Latin Mass was the universal norm.
Even if these allowances are made, however, I find it deeply disturbing that he has apparently chosen to draw a veil over the close links between the whole Lefebvrist movement and Action Française, which since the 1930s has been well known for its fascist views on almost everything. By deciding to reintegrate the Society of St Pius X, he has undermined all those who work for equality, freedom and reconciliation among races and creeds.
